Weatherization Assistance Program
Background
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) assists income-eligible families and individuals by reducing their heating/cooling costs and improving
the safety of their homes through energy efficiency measures. The maximum amount of assistance is limited to $6,500 per unit.
New York State has the largest WAP in the country. The WAP is administered by the Division of Housing & Community Renewal (DHCR), a State Agency
responsible for the supervision, maintenance and development of affordable low- and moderate-income housing.

Income Eligibility Limits
Households with incomes at or below 60% of state median income are eligible for assistance. Program services are available to both homeowners and renters, with priority given to senior citizens, families with children and persons with disabilities.
Eligible Area and Assistance Providers
All parts of the State are eligible. Every county, village, town and neighborhood is served by a local Weatherization Assistance Provider.
Weatherization Assistance Providers are not-for-profit organizations which receive funds from DHCR to provide weatherization assistance services to
eligible New York State residents

efficiency. Based on the results of the energy audit, they may provide some or all of the following services: weatherstripping and

replacement or repair of broken windows and/or outside doors; addition of insulation to walls or ceilings; and, mitigation of health and
safety concerns, including indoor air quality improvements, correction of ventilation problems that can lead to mold growth, and
identification of lead paint hazards.
Additional services may also include other energy-related improvements such as: water heater repair/replacement, roof repair/replacement,
chimney repairs, lighting fixture replacement, venting systems, heating distribution system replacement, refrigerator replacement, installation of GFIC
outlets, and electrical service upgrade, where indicated by an energy audit and an inspection of the unit.
